My Five Months in Paradise
Who am I?
Published: 5/4/25 / Author : Malin Melvoll Johnsen
Hi! My name is Malin Melvoll Johnsen, I’m 28 years old and from Norway. I’m currently studying Digital Marketing and spent one semester on exchange at Hawaii Pacific University.

From Norway to Hawaii
I’ve always loved to travel and experience new places, and I knew early on that I wanted to study abroad at some point. So, when the chance finally came, there was no doubt in my mind.
I chose Hawaii because it offered everything I was looking for – a warm climate, friendly people, and a culture I was excited to learn more about. I also wanted to try something different and experience what it would be like to live and study somewhere completely new.
Life as a student at HPU
I arrived in January 2024 and stayed until May. Five months sounded like a long time before I left, but once I was there, time flew by. The days quickly found a rhythm with lectures and assignments – mixed in with beach days, hiking trips and spontaneous road trips.
The academic system at HPU was different from what I was used to in Norway. Instead of one big exam at the end of the semester, we had assignments, presentations, and weekly deadlines in most classes. It took some adjusting, but it helped me stay more consistent throughout the semester. Attendance was also mandatory, which isn’t the case in Norway, but overall, the workload was manageable and well balanced.
Something to keep in mind: it’s freezing inside. The air conditioning is on full blast pretty much everywhere – on the bus, in shops and in the classrooms. So even if the climate is warm, I’d definitely recommend bringing some warmer clothes. Thank me later!

Getting the most
Out of the Island

Outside of school, there was so much to experience. One of the best ways to explore Oʻahu is by renting a car and just drive around the island. I loved the east side of the island – less crowded and beautiful beaches. Waimanalo Beach became a personal favorite with its white sand and turquoise water – the kind of beach you’d think only exists in movies.
For something completely different, I also went skydiving at the North Shore – something I never thought I’d do, but it turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of my stay.
Some of my best memories are from the weekends we travelled to other islands. I visited both Kauai and Big Island, and those trips were honestly unforgettable. Each island has its own vibe and landscape, and it’s 100% worth it if you have the chance. If you go to Kauai, I recommend doing a boat tour along the Nā Pali Coast – it was one of the most beautiful experiences of the whole semester. If you go to Big Island, you need to watch the sunset from Mauna Kea. That´s something I’ll never forget.
And let’s not forget the food – I basically lived on açaí bowls the last few weeks. My go-to spot was Tropical Tribe, near Fort DeRussy Beach Park. I still crave them now, months later. If you’re looking for a good dinner spot that doesn’t break your budget, P.F. Chang’s in Waikiki is a solid choice, especially if you like Asian food.

You won’t regret it
Looking back, I’m so glad I took the opportunity to study abroad. Hawaii gave me a break from my usual routines, helped me grow both personally and academically, and gave me friendships and experiences I’ll carry with me for a long time.
If you’re thinking about going – just go. Say yes to the opportunities that come your way and make the most of it. It goes by faster than you think.
The Best.
